Second draft for double page album advertisement

This is the second and final draft to the album advertisement, I have decided to use the draft I have previously used as an idea as to what I could do and altered it so it is more appealing and appropriate. I have decided that by defying usual convention of having a single page advertisement I have achieved what I have set out to do in my other ancillary product and the main product, of attempting to appeal to a niche audience by blatantly going against usual convention and making the obscure stand out among the crowd.
The first change I made since the previous draft is tidying up the top portion of the image as it looked too straight beforehand, which isn't the image I was going for.
The second change I have made is the change of font for the tagline, as it previously looked a bit too childish and didn't fit in with the rest of the font, and also shortening it from "Bringing it back to basics" to simply "Back to Basics". I originally wanted the font to seem basic to fit in with the tag line but different from the font used on the other two titles, but I have decided against this idea as I believe using the font continuously (except for on the models jacket) gives the advertisement a bit more of a flowing continuity.

Double page poster of album release

This is the second draft for my poster for my ablum release, it is done this time for a double page in a music magazine, this was done to give an idea what a double page poster may look like. This is not an improved idea on the first draft or a step backwards but purely just a step in a different direction to make sure that as many ideas are thought of as possible.

And these are the steps taken to create this piece of work

First draft for magazine advertisement

This is the first draft idea for my magazine advertisement for my imaginary album release.it was designed on the editing software Photoshop and the steps I took are included beneath the draft. The draft was inspired by both the advertisements which I researched previously, I have taken attributes from both advertisements, such as the star ratings, the star rating was inspired by both the Plan B and the Vaccines advertisements as it has only a few ratings (similar to the Vaccines) but the ratings are humble and similar to the ones used in the Plan B advertisement. The large bold writing is also inspired by The Vaccines as it punchy and straight to the point with a slogan which will stick in the reader's mind. Also, I have made the necessary additions to the advertisement, such as the record label which, as I show below, I have made myself including the record label's name and I have also included the website of the artist at the bottom of the advertisement.

First ideas for magazine advertisement

Today I am going to be producing some mock ideas for the magazine advertisement for my album release, by taking the research I have done into consideration I have been thinking of ideas that relate back to my research to show how they have inspired my work, I need to make sure I include all the necessary details, for example: record company, artists name, website for the artist, release date and possibly some reviews.
Artist Name
first of all I need to create a name for my imaginary artist, this will be 'SteamPunk' which is an alternative genre of fiction which relates back to Victorian ages with steam and coal being the main source of power, this alternative style also can relate to the punk side of things which is a rebellious genre of music (and although not the style of the music I have designed for my artist) it can create the impression that the artist is rebelling against modern society. The music which I have chosen for the album so far consists only of the song I have chosen for my music video, this is originally Beethoven (before remix) who died shortly before the Victorian era, although steam punk was designed in the Victorian steam and coal powered style I think the two aren't too far apart and it is meant to signify the original music (before remix) is that general area.
Record Label
The record company will be imaginary, as is the rest of the project is, and I will call it 'Def Fret Records' this relates back to my first year project where I named my music magazine 'Def Fret', it gives the project a more personal touch and relates all my work over the two years together. Also, the obvious specifics need to be taken into consideration such as the fact the page will be portrait so i can't design an advertisement in landscape.

Ideas for Album cover Art

Because the song which I have made a music video for is a remix of a classical Beethoven song 'Moonlight Sonata' the mixture of the urban and the classic music will be coming together in some form to create the cover art for my Gate fold Vinyl album.
I would like the convergence between the two to be simple and effective, I don't want a messy or extravagant image that would distract the consumers. By having a simple and low maintenance cover art it will represent the album which I am distributing.
The remix which I have made the music video for will be included on the album and it will be used to represent the other songs included on the album (max. 12) these remixes won't be too loud or extreme but a simple way of bringing classical music throughout history into the 21st century and giving them an urban style.
The first Idea I have for the album cover art is to have a simple black or white background with a person (male or female) stood in front of it, only their legs will be shown in the frame and the outfit I will be looking for is, on the front cover, a pair of worn out joggers or tracksuit bottoms with posh shoes and then on the reverse side a posh dress or suit with trainers. This idea was formed because it is a perfect example of the convergence of the urban and the classical (which is usually associated with the posh or upper class who are renowned for their posh outfits)

Ancillary Research - Magazine album advertisement

The second part of my ancillary text, for my project, is the magazine advertisement for the album, which will feature in music magazines that will criteria to the genre of music I am focusing on.
This is an advertisement for the artist 'Plan B' and his album 'The Defamation Of Strickland Banks', this is an example of how a conventional magazine album advertisement looks, there are many techniques which are used here that can be used as inspiration for my magazine advertisement as the conventions it uses are very eye catching.
The title, showing the artists name, is big and bold and the use of the red colour against the black background makes it stand out and the first thing the readers eye is drawn to. this is followed by slightly smaller words which show the name of the album, this time in white, as the white is also placed against the black background it stands out just as much as the red. By having white, red and black as the colour scheme the words all stand out especially as the red lines of words are separated by white lines (if all the font was either red or white the effect wouldn't be the same and would be less impressive).

This is the album cover for the album which is being advertised above, the colour scheme is the same here as it was in the magazine advertisement, this creates an impression of repetition and continuity throughout this album release making the reader associate the advertisements and the album together.

The use of all the headings and sub-headings being in bold uppercase letters it gives the reader the impression that this is an important piece of information and that they must keep reading on. Underneath the big titles and bold colours there are nine star ratings from various magazines and newspapers, these star ratings all show the same rating, four out of five, which is an impressive score but the main point is that at nine  different magazines and newspapers have all separately agreed on a high score, although some of these magazines and newspapers are not renowned for their album ratings (such as 'the big issue') the magazine 'Q' is in that list and is one of the biggest music magazines in the industry.

This magazine album advertisement is also very effective but is very different from the previous one. This advertisement is very simple, holding a pink tinted version of the front cover of the album cover art as it's background, the extremely large black lettering stands out creating an almost urgent feel to it, as if the information is vital.
the tag line used here forms around 70% of the page making it the most visually striking aspect of the page. The "What did you expect from the Vaccines?" could be seen as an ambiguous tag line as the question could mean one thing to one person and a different thing to another. The question also takes a bragging tone as it is placed above the reviews of three four star ratings from three major music magazines, as if saying "of course we got four stars we're the Vaccines!"
All the necessary information is also here including the record label and an image of the album cover so that readers can recognize it when they're next shopping but also in the bottom left hand corner of the page is the logo for the popular internet shopping site, 'Play.com', this shows the readers where they can buy the album but also because of the confident and ambiguous tag line it could also be seen as suggesting that as soon as the reader views this advertisement they will be rushing about trying to buy the album and it has supplied you with a way of getting it.

These two advertisements both hold simplistic but highly useful attributes which I am looking at carrying on to my project, the use of big lettering and simple backgrounds makes the readers attention stay on the content and the use of ambiguity and confidence in the album is a very interesting and alternative technique which will inspire my work.

Vinyl research - Ancillary text

Ancillary texts research

As well as my music video for my creative project I also need to create to additional ancillary texts alongside it, to be finished by the 8th of February (maximum!). these two texts are:

  • A cover for its release as part of a Digipak (CD/DVD/Vinyl package)
  • A magazine advertisement for the Digipak (DC/DVD/Vinyl package)
My original idea was to do a simple 6 sided digipak including a CD but now because of the growing come back of Vinyl in the music industry I am going to create a Vinyl gatefold for my album release.
It would be in this style:
This would be the complete outline, with an album design image on the front and back (which will include all the necessary writing, copyright issues, production price) and the inside would include more artwork and photography. As the album is instrumental it would not have lyrics on despite this perhaps being a convention.

This is a 3D view of the inside of the gatefold and how the sleeves on either side would open up, on the right hand side the LP would come out and then a cut out on the left hand side which would be a poster that would only be available with this album's purchase.

A2 Media Final Draft Coursework

This is the final draft for my A2 media studies coursework which is a music video for a song of my choice. The song is moonlight Sonata (remix) originally by Beethoven and then remixed by an artist called 'Solarfist' This has then been edited by me also to fit in with the music video. An error occurred after editing where I noticed, in the scenes where there should be flashing Negative images, that an error screen flashes instead. This will be amended as soon as possible but cannot be changed until Monday 18th February at least as everyone is on Holiday at the moment.

ERROR: This Video has had problems with the flashing images Within some of the shots.
I have now amended these and the completed video is found beneath...

first cut of Music video A2 media Studies

This is the first cut of my music video for my A2 media studies coursework, with all the shots in place. The clips and audio are in the same place they should be within the final draft, the colour however is not finished with and will be edited before the final draft.
